It has been ten years since,
at the age of 21 I won a National Publishing Award for my photographs
of the North Peckham Estate, London, the area I was born and
grew in. When I took those pictures I figured that the environment
I was in contributed to the social condition of myself the people
in my area. To some extent this was true. But, I now think that
economics are an equal, if not more, significant factor.
The environment was oppressive,
but what was more oppressive was not being able to change our
relationship to it, or it's relationship to us.
One thing I did say in the
Architects Journal article was that "so often change was
a step nowhere".
'Regeneration' is the buzz
word for the '90's (in fact 'buzz word' is the buzz word for
the '90's). I want to see now that the decision makers saw what
I could not see with my 21 year old eyes. If people and
the environment are regenerated then one will take care of the
other...if not they will abuse each other. ©
